“My Look to the Future”

By Julie Dunn

I have to learn how to adjust

So many various things

My diet

My vitamin intake

My calcium supplements

What shoes I wear

Engage with how much exercise I can do

I often worry because I know that it would not take much

For the figure skater to finally break through the ice

So, I will need to be more careful

Being tested more frequently

For any signs of bone loss

Which would lead to the inescapable shark teeth of pain

As well as an exhausting long road to recovery

With not much gas left in the tank

I did not have to think about any of this before

This is all new in the last couple of years

And there are still so many changes to come

I still have so much left to do

Like a ballerina who just won’t quit dancing

And so many more memories to make

With the people I love the most

I feel so fortunate to have family and friends who care about me

Going forward, I still plan to be an energetic deer

In my mind, I feel the grace of a gazelle

Even if I appear more awkward like a duck in the sand

Trying new ways to stretch, walk, and relax

Keeping up on new trends and suggestions from an array of women

And being open to new opportunities to feel the wind rushing through my dark hair once again.
