“all i am is flesh and bone”

by Melisa Santana

i crawled across the dirt road, hands and

knees aching, bleeding me dry. everything

dead or alive slipped away a long time ago;

nothing truly matters anymore. body covered in

splinters and stray porcupine needles that

got stuck in fraying skin. the epitome of

a zombie roaming this earth, seeking

love and lust and freedom. i collapse.

vultures land, pick at my eyeballs and

wounds. and i let them, my viscera free

for all to bear witness to. my heart

exposed, seeing sunlight once imagined. they

devour me. it devours me. no care for

my death. they eat until there’s nothing

left for me to give – they choose

to consume my everything.
