“Mechromancy”

by Michael C. Denysenko

Ethereal magical gears interlocked and circled around the dwarven mechanic’s hands as he cast a spell. Stone, wood, and metal components levitated and fit themselves into place. The project was a gigantic humanoid figure, whose head stood taller than the king’s castle.

“Ah, you two,” the dwarven mechanic began,  “I was just about to call you out here. What do you think?” the cyan sparks from the mechanic’s spell streaked across the room.

Two humans in tattered cloaks and rusted armor walked into the mechanic’s shop. “It’s incredible… what is it?” one human said.

“Not quite sure what to call it yet, I figured I’d let you name it.” the mechanic responded.

“Can I pilot it like I asked?” said the other human.

“Yes, of course.” the mechanic began, gesturing to an opening in the giant machine’s chest.

“Just adding the finishing touches now, it even has a cupholder in the driver’s area.”

A final sheet of metal floated across the room, covering the figure’s nose and mouth. Now that it was complete, the machine looked like a gigantic knight, its sword and shield stowed on its back.

“It’s all set.” the mechanic said, finishing his spell. At once, the giant seemed to spring to life and kneel, reaching its hand out for a pilot. One of the humans stepped into the giant knights hand. It brought its soon-to-be-pilot to its chest. The human climbed in, looking at the various levers and pulleys within.

“So”, the mechanic began, “are you ready to start a revolution?”
